Pet Accidents on Area Rugs: What Happens in the Foundation

A pet accident looks like a surface problem. You blot it, clean it, and the spot disappears. Then the smell comes back on the first humid day of monsoon season. That's because the real problem was never on the surface.

It Goes Down, Then Spreads

Urine soaks straight through the pile into the foundation and backing, then spreads sideways underneath. The spot you can see on top is usually much smaller than the area affected below. On a thick wool rug, it can also reach the pad and the floor.

Why It Comes Back

As urine dries, it leaves behind salts that don't evaporate. They sit in the foundation, quiet when the air is dry. When humidity rises, those salts pull moisture back in and the odor returns. In Arizona, that's why so many people notice a smell only during monsoon season.

Color Changes Can Be Permanent

Urine can react with rug dyes and change their color, especially on older hand-dyed wool. This shows up as a lighter or yellowed spot that stays after cleaning. That isn't soil left behind. It's the dye itself that has changed, and no cleaning reverses it. We'll tell you honestly if that's what we're seeing.

What to Do Right Away

  1. Blot up as much as you can with dry white towels, pressing firmly. Don't rub.
  2. Lightly dampen with cool water and blot again.
  3. Skip the steam cleaner and hot water. Heat can set odor and stains into the fiber.
  4. Avoid household cleaners with bleach or ammonia, which can strip dye.
  5. Let it dry with good airflow, and call a specialist if odor lingers.

How We Treat It

We assess how far the contamination spread, identify the fiber and test the dyes, then treat it down in the foundation where it actually sits, right in your home. Heavily affected rugs take more time, and we give them the time they need. Some deep contamination can't be fully resolved on site, and we'll tell you that before we start rather than after.
